Lyrical is ballet's expressive cousin: the same turnout, extensions, and turns, set to music with words, danced to tell a story. Contemporary pushes further — floor work, release, weight, and breath — and asks dancers to make choices instead of only copying shapes. At The Facility both styles start young (our preschool lyrical class begins at age 3) and share a room with ballet, because that is where the technique underneath them comes from.
These classes belong in Studio 3, the quiet box: 900 square feet of sprung marley, a single spotlight rig, and the most theatrical room in the building. Black walls and one line of teal light do something specific for expressive styles — dancers stop performing for the mirror and start dancing for themselves.
First class free, no card. Enroll within 24 hours and the $35 registration fee is waived. Tuition is published to the dollar: $69 a month for one 45-minute class, $80 for one hour, and $129 for two — which is what most lyrical dancers end up taking once they add ballet.
Lyrical for little dancers, contemporary for older ones
For ages 3 to 6, lyrical is taught through imagery and story: reaching like a sunrise, melting like ice cream, a short dance to a song with words they know. Several of our early classes are labeled Ballet/Lyrical because the two are taught together — the barre builds the body, the lyrical half builds the joy. It is one of the best first classes for a sensitive, musical kid.
For school-age and teen dancers, class opens with a floor-based warm-up (spine rolls, contractions, core work), moves through technique across the floor — leaps, turns in and out of the floor, extensions — and finishes with a combination that prioritizes intention over tricks. Contemporary classes add improvisation and partnering concepts as dancers mature. Ballet alongside is strongly recommended, and teachers will say so at the trial.

What to wear
Leotard or fitted top with leggings or shorts, bare feet or foot undies, hair pulled back. Contemporary dancers often prefer knee pads once floor work gets serious. For the free trial, comfortable fitted clothes and bare feet are all you need.
The path from lyrical to company
Lyrical and contemporary are core competition disciplines, and our invite-only company draws from these classes as teachers see readiness. It is optional, always. A dancer who stays recreational keeps the same instructors, the same Studio 3 spotlight, and the same Winter Showcase stage.
We are at 21461 N 78th Ave, Suite 185 in north Peoria, off the Loop 101 at Deer Valley — minutes from Arrowhead and an easy drive from Glendale, Sun City, and Surprise. Studio hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 9:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 2:00 pm; we are closed Sundays.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between lyrical and contemporary?
Lyrical is ballet and jazz technique danced expressively to music with lyrics; the story drives the movement. Contemporary uses more floor work, release, and weight, and asks dancers to make creative choices. Younger dancers start in lyrical; contemporary is added as they mature.
Does my dancer need ballet to take lyrical?
Not to start — our preschool and early classes teach both together. From school age on, a ballet class alongside makes a visible difference, and teachers will recommend it honestly at the free trial.
What age can a child start lyrical?
Age 3 in our preschool lyrical class; ages 4 to 6 in Pre-Primary Ballet/Lyrical. Contemporary is introduced for school-age and teen dancers.
Are the songs appropriate?
Yes. Music for youth classes is chosen for clean lyrics and age-appropriate themes, and choreography matches the age of the room.
How much do lyrical and contemporary classes cost?
