Tap teaches something no other style does: musicianship through the feet. A dancer who taps learns to hear subdivisions of a beat, to keep time with a group, and to produce clean, distinct sounds on purpose — skills that carry into every other style and, honestly, into music class and math class too. At The Facility, tap classes for school-age dancers start around age 6 and run through the pre-teen years.
We teach on sprung floors in black-box rooms, which turns out to be a gift for tap: a sprung floor protects growing joints from the repetitive impact, and black walls with a single teal line make the rhythm the whole point of the room. Class sizes are capped so the teacher can actually hear each dancer's feet.
First class free, no card required. Enroll within 24 hours and the $35 registration fee is waived. Tuition is on the pricing page: $69 a month for one 45-minute class, $80 for one hour.
What a tap class covers
Beginners start with the sounds: shuffles, flaps, ball changes, and heel drops, learned slowly enough that each one is clean before it gets fast. Class usually opens with a warm-up at the barre or in a circle to wake up the ankles, moves into across-the-floor drills where dancers travel while keeping time, and finishes with a short combination set to music.
As dancers progress, the vocabulary widens — cramp rolls, time steps, paradiddles, and pullbacks — and the emphasis shifts to musicality: playing with accents, holding a rhythm while the music changes, and eventually trading phrases with a partner. Tap dancers also perform at the Winter Showcase, and a tap number is usually the loudest applause of the night.

Tap shoes and what to wear
Comfortable, fitted dance clothes and tap shoes — black Mary Jane style for younger dancers, oxford style for older ones — with hair pulled back. For the free trial, sneakers or bare feet are fine; the teacher will demonstrate the sounds and let your dancer try the basics without tap shoes first. Ask us before buying; a badly fitted tap shoe is the fastest way to sour a kid on the style.
Why tap pairs well with anything
Tap plus ballet, tap plus jazz, tap plus musical theatre — all three are classic pairings, because tap adds rhythm and speed to a dancer who already has line and technique. Our monthly tuition drops per hour as weekly hours add up, so a second class costs much less than the first.
We are in north Peoria at 78th Ave and Deer Valley Road, just off the Loop 101 — minutes from Arrowhead, close to Glendale, Sun City, and Surprise. Studio hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 9:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 2:00 pm; we are closed Sundays.
Questions parents ask
What age can my child start tap?
Our tap classes are built for school-age dancers, typically from age 6. Younger dancers develop the same rhythm and coordination in our preschool jazz and Disney Princess classes before moving into tap shoes.
Do we need tap shoes for the free trial?
No. Sneakers or bare feet are fine for the first class. Buy tap shoes after you enroll, and ask the teacher which style and fit she recommends.
Is tap hard on a child's knees?
Not on a sprung floor. All four of our studios have sprung floors that absorb impact, and beginner classes build speed gradually so joints and ankles strengthen along with the technique.
Does tap help with other styles?
A lot. Tap dancers hear music more precisely and pick up rhythmically complex choreography faster in jazz, hip hop, and musical theatre.
What does a tap class cost?
$69 a month for one weekly 45-minute class, $80 for one hour; two weekly hours in any combination of styles is $129. Registration is $35, waived within 24 hours of the free trial.
